Escaping Pavement | Borr + McFerrin | Static of a Stranger

to Feb 16

Escaping Pavement | Borr + McFerrin | Static of a Stranger

Join us for a night of carefully curated duos at Old Dog Tavern. 10pm, $5 cover, artwork by Stacy Koviak-Davison

Escaping Pavement:
Hailed as “The most dynamic Americana group out of Detroit,
Michigan" Escaping Pavement masterfully blends and blurs the lines of Bluegrass, Folk, and Americana. Their unique joint frontperson arrangement, with Emily and Aaron sharing equally in singing, songwriting, and guitar playing allows for harmony-driven, musical interplay that has earned them slots on bills with the likes of Justin Townes Earle and Joan Osborne. With a 2017 Detroit Music Award win for Outstanding Americana Record, over 700 shows under their belt, a new EP comprised of music inspired by the National Parks, and a nonstop touring schedule, this duo is spreading their roots-based message, far and wide. Find out why Jeff Milo of the Detroit Free Press said, “Escaping Pavement make sparseness stunning. The acoustic guitar and mandolin crackle together like a mesmerizing bonfire, and their
voices blend together like the azure purple and tawny oranges of vibrant sunset…"

Borr McFerrin:
Matthew Borr and Carrie McFerrin have been making music for five years after meeting at a music festival near Kalamazoo, Michigan. They have crafted Folk, Americana and pop influenced songs that are original, yet reminiscent of traditional styles. Their performances could be compared to such duos as Gillian Welch/David Rawlings or the Lumineers with their updated takes on their finely crafted songs, or their song cover choices, which include an eclectic array, such as Robert Johnson, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Prince. They can be found opening or headlining shows at Bell’s Eccentric Café, Old Dog Tavern, and Louie’s Trophy House Grill, as well as many other venues across the Midwest region. It’s common to catch them collaborating with other Michigan musicians and participating actively in the music community.

Static of a Stranger:
Stacy Koviak-Davison and Chris Miroslaw are no strangers to the Kalamazoo music scene. They’ve been creating music together for over a decade in various bands (Treading Bleu / Dooley Noted) and individually for another decade prior. Embarking on an entirely new musical endeavour, Static of a Stranger’s musical repertoire spans from Koviak’s acoustic singer-songwriter roots all the way to layered atmospheric and ethereal anthemic offerings. Driven by potent, introspective lyrics ― Koviak’s emotive and versatile voice along with her dynamic guitar playing allow her to intuitively float between rock, folk and pop ― all infused with hints of soulful jazz. Sounding sweet one moment, then powerfully smokey and rich the next ― it’s been described “like chili pepper in hot chocolate.” Combine that with Miroslaw’s stylish and creatively atmospheric guitar work and the duo’s flexible multi-instrumentalism ― they deftly weave profound tales of love, loss, hope, and emotional struggle into intoxicating music that bends borders and genres.

NorthLand | Captain Cat | Chuck Whiting

to Jan 26

NorthLand | Captain Cat | Chuck Whiting

Eclecticism rules the day (or night, as it were) as NorthLand, Capt. Cat, and the irrepressible Chuck Whiting Jr. hit the stage at the Old Dog Tavern!

Kalamazoo's NorthLand serves up a bluesy stew of grooves that blends steaming funk, buttery jazz, and backwoods hatchet-folk. Sharing space on the musical plate are tight instrumentals, moody jams, and lyrics of love and longing in a brave, weird America that's peppered with busted-out chicken shacks, over-the-hill pro wrestlers, and sun-faded mile markers.

https://www.facebook.com/TheRealNorthLand/

Chuck Whiting Jr., the great-grandson of vaudeville song-and-dance man George A. Whiting, is a really great musician and a high-energy entertainer who brings a unique appreciation for Western Swing to the Michigan music scene! Chuck is also a really great guitarist, with a style reminiscent of Django Reinhardt. As a songwriter, he's drawn comparisons to John Prine, even though he's never really listened to John Prine. We think you'll like Chuck Whiting Jr., he's high-energy!

https://www.facebook.com/chuckwhitingjr/

Combine jazzy chords, smooth bass lines, and plaintive vocals and you get...spacey prog rock?? Few bands can mix disparate influences with such ease and originality like Kalamazoo's Capt. Cat. Psychedelic freakouts, far-reaching jams, pulsing hoe-down train-track beats--Capt. Cat does it all, and often in the same song. If you threw all your favorite records in a blender, you'd have...a mess of shredded plastic and a lot of regret. A great remedy would be to check out Capt. Cat at the Old Dog Tavern!
