TWINE Book Release - Monica Duncan

7 P.M. | Free cover | All Ages

Join us on Monday, October 14 for the book release of Twine, by Monica Duncan. “Twine” celebrates a quietly radical view of small-town life, ambition, and motherhood. It is the story of a young woman who needs no hero, and what she does when he shows up anyway.” This is a free event, open for all ages starting at 7 P.M. at the main indoor stage.

About Twine:

“When Juniper Kowalski, a mediocre artist and graduate of one of the best art schools in the country, gets pregnant by her married lover, she ends up back in Gobles, Michigan, living in her dead grandma’s trailer. She fears that her new life as a hotel maid, and as the best friend of a subrural call girl, has fulfilled some bleak fate. But Juniper’s pregnancy also ignites a will to create. Every hurt that she’s ever suffered begins to emerge as confrontational, public art.

Family lore has taught Juniper disdain for men. But it’s not hatred for her absent father, abusive grandpa, or even her baby daddy, causing her issues. It’s facing actual love from a big, flawed, breathtaking man. “Twine” celebrates a quietly radical view of small-town life, ambition, and motherhood. It is the story of a young woman who needs no hero, and what she does when he shows up anyway.”

October Babies - 12th Anniversary Show

Indoor Stage | 9 P.M. | 21+ | $5 cover

Enjoy upbeat global soul directly from the mouths of this Michigan native band, October Babies! October Babies are turning 12 in this October and they want to celebrate with YOU! They will take the stage along with The Band Up, Friday at 9 p.m.!

Background:

October Babies was born when Japanese singer Toko Shiiki and bassist/arranger Erik Santos met in Tokyo in 2002, while Erik was resident composer for the notorious butoh dance/theater group Dairakudakan. Soon after Toko moved to the US to study photography in 2005, the couple produced their debut CD "Ao-zora Radio" (Blue-sky Radio), named after Toko's monthly podcast.

Joined then by electric strumming of Dale King and Mike Ouellette, and dynamic drumming of Ben Lorenz - the October Babies have singular sound and a super-high-powered upbeat energy.

Their songs are in Japanese and English - a catchy multilcultural potluck of funk, jazz, R&B, reggae/ska/dub, techno, latin, drum&bass, rock, surfpunk, hip hop, downtempo, orch pop, blues, Okinawa folk, aaaand ... everything.

They've won major Japanese music competitions, like J-WAVE MUSIC HYPER MARKET and Yahoo Japan Indies Jump, and Toko was voted the Outstanding World/Reggae/Ska Vocalist at the 2011 Detroit Music Awards.

His infusion of blues, folk, rock, and country have provided him a broad spectrum musical platform and his small town stories and affection for the American way of life has become signature in his work. South By South Deuce

Indoor Stage | 9 P.M. | $5 | 21+

Three Michigan-based two piece bands will be rocking the indoor stage at OLD DOG TAVERN.

400 Rabbits: Blending elements of rock, blues, punk and folk, 400 Rabbits brings a stripped-down, yet full, rocking sound to the stage. Drawing on influences from The Immortal Lee County Killers to Black Diamond Heavies and even the likes of The White Stripes and The Black Keys, it's an in-your-face (and loud) ride that explores depth, anger, and a nod to American musical roots.

Political Lizard: This introspectively intense duo has quickly evolved in a short span of time. Fronted by the haunting harmonic combination of singer-songwriters Jenna Olsen and Caleb Waldvogel, the group’s soul-piercing simplicity has grown by leaps and bounds with the addition of guitarist/bassist/keyboardist John Bomer and drummer Miles Ferguson

Lucius Fox: Lucius Fox is the sonic equivalent of a grizzly bear and great white shark fighting to the death in the shallows of a teal blue sea at sunset. Moments of ferocity, technicality and grit are juxtaposed against serene, colorful melody. Lucius Fox will be recording their third LP this autumn.
