NorthLand | Captain Cat | Chuck Whiting

Eclecticism rules the day (or night, as it were) as NorthLand, Capt. Cat, and the irrepressible Chuck Whiting Jr. hit the stage at the Old Dog Tavern!

Kalamazoo's NorthLand serves up a bluesy stew of grooves that blends steaming funk, buttery jazz, and backwoods hatchet-folk. Sharing space on the musical plate are tight instrumentals, moody jams, and lyrics of love and longing in a brave, weird America that's peppered with busted-out chicken shacks, over-the-hill pro wrestlers, and sun-faded mile markers.

Chuck Whiting Jr., the great-grandson of vaudeville song-and-dance man George A. Whiting, is a really great musician and a high-energy entertainer who brings a unique appreciation for Western Swing to the Michigan music scene! Chuck is also a really great guitarist, with a style reminiscent of Django Reinhardt. As a songwriter, he's drawn comparisons to John Prine, even though he's never really listened to John Prine. We think you'll like Chuck Whiting Jr., he's high-energy!

Combine jazzy chords, smooth bass lines, and plaintive vocals and you get...spacey prog rock?? Few bands can mix disparate influences with such ease and originality like Kalamazoo's Capt. Cat. Psychedelic freakouts, far-reaching jams, pulsing hoe-down train-track beats--Capt. Cat does it all, and often in the same song. If you threw all your favorite records in a blender, you'd have...a mess of shredded plastic and a lot of regret. A great remedy would be to check out Capt. Cat at the Old Dog Tavern!
